Using Stainless Steel in the Outdoors!

March 26, 2015

An understandable concern most people have when choosing stainless steel furniture for an outdoor application is its durability. No one wants an ugly stainless steel furniture piece with marks of rust and grime so, here are some points and considerations when using Stainless Steel in your outdoor room.
1. There are two types of Stainless Steel that are used in outdoor applications and that is 304 Grade (inland) and Marine Grade (coastal).
2. “Brushed” Stainless Steel is used outside and “Polished” is not. Though they could be of the same grade, the polished varieties lose their durability during the polishing process.
3. Vulnerable to salt and chlorine so clean and maintain to avoid tea stains (brown spots). Should tea stains occur, use a Scotch-Brite® pad in the direction of the grain.
4. Maintain and clean frequently regardless of location with a Stainless Steel cleaner or soapy water and remember, go against the grain.
5. Scratches and Marks? In most cases you can again, buff these out with a Scotch-Brite® pad. Always check with the manufacturer first.
6. 100% Recyclable.
7. Do not use chemicals, rough surface cleaners and steel wool.
